Holy Shit

Cutting is also a way of marking the body's boundaries, of proving what's inside and what's outside the body. It may allow abuse survivors to reclaim their bodies in the same way refusing to eat gives anorexics a feeling of control.... Their wounds may also serve as a badge of proof, a concrete marker to punish the abuser, or to make a parent, who may not have abused the child but failed to protect her, take notice. In that sense the cuts are a symbolic cry for help or a manifesto of resistance, even if inflicted long after the actual abuse. Through this 'body language' of blood and scars, they can communicate much more directly and forcefully than they can speak in words. ....They bury their feelings so deeply that to even imagine letting them out feels completely overwhelming, as if they would drown in their tears or erupt in anger so savage they would kill.
